Skiing in Spain - Where to go

Although Spain is known to be a hot country, it does offer some incredible skiing places. It's not the most popular sport here, but it does a get a lot of interest in the winter months, but because it's not very common, most places require travelling, so sometimes it's just easier to make a vacation out of it.

One of the best things about these places is that not only are they great places to go and experience in winter, but also great in summer. Most of these places offer a variety of summer activities too.


Here are some of the skiing resorts in Spain;


Sierra Nevada

Situated in the province of Granada, Andalucia, Sierra Nevada is one of the most popular skiing places in Spain.

Sierra Nevada ski resort is the southernmost of Europe and the highest altitude in Spain. It is usually suitable for skiing, due to the good climate and despite the usual hardness of its snow.



Baqueira Beret

Its a ski resort located in the Aran Valley, in the Catalan Pyrenees.

Baqueira Beret is the largest ski resort in Spain, with a transport capacity of 59,424 skiers per hour, a ski area of 2,166 ha, 161 km of groomed slopes, 7 km of trails, 10 km of cross-country skiing and 1101 meters of unevenness.

From the station you can see mountain peaks that exceed 3000 meters in height.

What it has to offer:

The alternative winter offer to skiing includes horse or dog sledge rides, excursions to the semi-abandoned town of Montgarri, cross-country skiing and procreations with snowshoes and snowmobiles.



Aramon Formigal

Formigal is a Spanish town located in Sallent de Gallego, in then province of Huesca, Aragon.

This station has 137 kilometres of slopes, 1 toboggan run, 1 racket circuit and new off-piste itineraries.

What it has to offer:

It offers the usual services of a ski resort: ski lifts (with a capacity of 35,920 skiers per hour), infirmary, ski school, equipment rental, catering, etc.

It also has 3 special slopes: Snow Park, Video Slalom and Tubers.

Starting in 2006, summer activities began in the Anayet area with an operating chair lift and the installation of a playground. In addition, the old cable car has been exchanged for a chairlift.



Espot

Espot is a town located in Lleida, Catalunya, up in the Pyrenees.

Located in a corner of the Catalan Pyrenees, this ski resort is one of the most beautiful and with great ecological value. It is located within the Aigüestortes I Estany de Sant Maurici National Park.

The tracks all end on the nerve centre of the station, making it difficult to get lost between different valleys.

What it has to offer:

It has the usual services in this type of facilities, from restaurants, cafes, ski school, equipment rental, etc.

It also has an area for the little ones, with different elements for young people to learn this sport and in the constant care of specialised personnel.

In summer, you can do many other sports such as rafting, paragliding, horse riding, canyoning, hiking or canoeing.



La Molina

Its located in the town of Alp, province of Gerona. A ski resort in the Catalan Pyrenees.

The ski resort facilities are developed occupying the north and east slopes of the Tosa d'Alp mountain (2536 m) and north, east and west of the Puigllançada

(2409 m).

The ski area of this station is 61 km spread over 54 slopes. It also has a large snowpark and the largest half-tube in the Pyrenees.

La Molina takes into account the needs of people with physical disabilities, which is why it has specially adapted facilities to facilitate the stay and the practice of adapted alpine skiing.



Aramon Cerler

Located in the town of Cerler, In the Aragones Pyrenees.

Aramón Cerler is the highest alpine ski resort in the Aragonese PyreneesIt is located in the heart of the Benasque Valley, surrounded by fir forests and 60 peaks over 3,000 meters.

It has one of the largest skiable slopes in the entire mountain range, ranging from 1500 metres from the base to 2700 metres from Pico GallineroMost of the stations are between 1900 and 2700 meters. In this station there are all kinds of tracks, from beginners to experts.

What it has to offer:

It offers the services of a ski lift, ski lift, ski school, equipment rental, restoration, etc.

It also offers services in summer, such as biking.



Aramon Valdelinares

Located in the town of Valdelinares, in the province of Teruel.

Despite its small size, this ski resort located at 2000 meters of altitude is very interesting for fans of Aragon and the Comunidad Valenciana since it is located south of Teruel, in the Sierra de Gúdar.

What it has to offer:

Ski rental, ski repair, ski storage, ski and snowboard school, kindergarten, shops, doctor's office, piped music and PA system, restaurant, cafes and terraces for sunbathing.



Manzaneda

Manzaneda is located in the province of Orense. It is currently the only ski resort in Galicia.

Manzaneda is a small ski resort-oriented for the enjoyment of a quiet family ski. It is immersed in a large pine forest of more than 2000 ha that gives it enormous beauty, especially in winter. Although it does not have a large extension of slopes (17km), it offers beautiful off-piste routes through the forest among pine trees to connoisseurs of the area.

It offers 23 approved tracks for alpine skiing of various difficulties; a 5 km circuit for cross-country skiing (without stepping); and a snowpark with different modules.

The lifts comprise 4 ski lifts and two modern detachable four and six-seater chairlifts that allow 7,600 skiers/hour to be moved.

It has a ski school, for those who want to start or perfect their technique and also has a renewed ski and snowboard equipment rental service

What it has to offer:

Sports facilities: 25m indoor heated pool, Spa circuit, sauna, whirlpool, a modern indoor sports hall and gym, which are open all year round and are completed outside of winter with outdoor sports facilities: soccer, basketball, volleyball fields, tennis courts, 5-way wall climbing, riding school and a go-kart circuit.
