a wonderful place with an idyllic reputation as a summer holiday destination,
Bilbao is the perfect destination. It is a coastal town in northeastern Spain,
bordered by Costa Blanca to the north, the Mediterranean to the south, and the
Alps to the east. Bilbao features some of the prettiest beaches in the entire
Mediterranean, and its cultural life is prosperous and varied.
Here you can experience
traditional Basque / Iberian cuisine, shop at flea markets, watch a live
opera, take part in a musical festival, or attend an art show. There are so
many things to do in Bilbao that you might never run out of things to see and
do!
A bit of history
Bilbao is the
second-oldest city in Spain. It was founded in 1492 as a fishing city and later
became a leading merchant and political center. Today, it is one of the most
famous tourist destinations on the planet. It is a fascinating mix of old and
new. The best way to see Bilbao is to take a car, ride the metro, or walk to
the historic center.
St. Joana is a must-see
historical area in Bilbao. It has unique architecture, including a row of
16th-century wooden steeples that mark the island’s beginning. St. Joana's main
square is the city's focal point, and it features a spectacular view of one of
the island's oldest neighborhoods, San Bartolome.
Walking in this historic
part of the city is a must for anyone to learn more about Spanish history. You
can also visit the friary of San Bartolome, which is a museum dedicated to
Saint Benilde.
The Museums
This museum is perfect
for anyone interested in learning more about the life of the Dominican
princess. It is one of the best museums in the world. There is an exhibit
dedicated to the queen’s life, which offers a glimpse into her time as a royal.
The royal family was
forced to leave the city after a brief war, but the museum has kept copies of
critical events in the queen’s life. This is an excellent place for people
interested in culture and history.
Several churches and
cathedrals highlight the medieval era of Bilbao. The most prominent church is
the San Bartolome Catholic Church, which is near the seafront. Tourists can
also visit the Church of Santa Maria de Gracia and the San Carlos Cathedral.
These churches provide tourists with insights into the life of the city.
This is a good spot for
a first-time visitor to the city. It allows tourists to see the sights of the
old town while learning more about the city and the island itself. There are
also some nice bars to hang out at during the evening.
UNESCO world heritage sites
One thing to do and see
in Bilbao that many visitors do not realize is that the island has two UNESCO
World Heritage sites. One of these is the Grand Bassa Island. An exhibit is a
significant home to the 'Grand Bassa Castle.' This castle is one of the best
examples of Spanish craftsmanship.
The other site is the
Ensavy Land that features archaeological excavations. Many tourists come here
to see the ruins and have a chance to learn more about the history of the
island.
The elephant ride
One of the main things
to do and see in Bilbao to make sure you leave with a good impression is to go
on an elephant ride. Elephant rides are usually a great way to travel around
the island and see some of the sights that you cannot get to see anywhere else.
If you want to get a
group of friends or family together, you can plan a trip to Ensavy Land and
ride through the park and the forest. You can also visit the national museum of
history and try to take a tour of the area. There is plenty to see and do in
and around Bilbao.
Once-curb town
When you think of Bilbao, you most likely
think of a medieval town on a hill with red brick dwellings peeking out from
the hillside. However, the once-curb town has undergone many changes over the
years. Now, it is one of the hottest destinations in Europe, with thousands of
visitors every year. The following are some things to do and see in Bilbao.
Art & Culture
If you are interested in culture and art, the
San Bartolome de Lloret de Mar is an absolute must. This historical landmark is
well worth a trip. This building is a major tourist draw and is known for its
medieval history.
As if that weren't enough of a reason to visit
this wonderful city, the next stop on our Things to Do and See in Bilbao
itinerary is the Santo Domingo Church. Built in 1512, this church is a
five-star establishment. The interior features beautiful frescoes. The exterior
features beautiful frescoes as well.
The dining spots
If you like to play sports or drink beer, then
this is the place for you. You can see the Bilbao ballpark from here. There is
also a casino in Bilbao that you can visit if you so desire.
One of the most important places to visit in
Bilbao is, of course, La Peruana Restaurant.
It is a beautiful dining spot that serves
traditional Spanish fare. It has an outdoor bar where you can see people
playing billiards. This is an excellent place for families, couples, and just
about anyone else that you would want to have a few drinks with.
At Last
And last but certainly not least, we have to
tell you about one of our favorite things to do in Bilbao - strolling through
the sleepy town. Stop into the fancy boutique shop called the Caticlan to see
some of the finest authentic Spanish furniture. You will also find a great flea
market that you can visit. This is an excellent thing to do if you like
shopping!
